Description
Retort Pouch is a semi-rigid, flexible and leak-proof packaging solution made from heat resistant laminated plastic, allowing it to withstand a high temperature of up to 250 °C. This feature enables the sterile packaging of a wide variety of food products ranging from soups to sauces. It can also be used for cook-in-a-bag meals, making it the ideal go-to packaging option for convenient, processed and pre-packaged food.
Properties of the Retort Pouch
The Retort Pouch is typically made of 4 layers and is FDA approved, making it safe for contact with food and has undergone sterilisation, increasing the durability of the packaging.
- Propylene. This first layer functions as a heat seal surface and provides strength and flexibility.
- Nylon. Capable of providing resistance to abrasion.
- Aluminium Foil. Functions as a protective barrier to light, gases, microorganisms and odours. It also helps to extend the shelf life of the product, and the stiffness of the aluminium foil is what allows the feature of tear notch.
- Polyester. Provides high durability and temperature resistant, and allows printing of graphics.
Benefits of using Retort Pouches
Capable of reducing heat exposure due to the multiple layers, which makes up the pouch. This enables food to be preserved while improving the colour, taste, aroma and shape of the food product as well as minimises nutrition lost at the same time.
Allows easier distribution and lesser storage space. Retort Pouches are flexible in nature and can stand upright, maintaining food composition while taking up minimum space on the shelves. This also allows easy distribution as more products can be transported at one time, reducing transportation cost required.
Its “tear notch” feature allows easy opening of the package and eliminates the risk of injuries caused by openers used to open the package.
